Using Refined Non-Iodized Salt for the Salt Water Flush

by Eleanor
(Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil)

I live outside of the US (in Brazil) and I haven't been able to find non-iodized, unrefined sea salt to do the Salt Water Flush during the Master Cleanse. I have been informed that the sale of non-iodized salt has been prohibited here by my natural foods store.

I have the option of using non-iodized but refined salt (from a pharmacy, whose label reads pure Sodium Cloride). I am hesitant as it is not the natural, unrefined salt that I am used to.

Do you see any reason not to use the medical grade Sodium Chloride for a Salt Water Flush? I was just starting the cleanse and planned to do my first SWF tomorrow morning.

Thank you very much for any light you can shed on this!

Terri's Comments: Hi Eleanor, I applaud your efforts on experiencing the Master Cleanse. It can be challenging but the benefits are worth it.

You have a good question and though I am not a scientist, I will give you my logical explanation.

With the refined version, it will not contain as high of a mineral content that you would get with the unrefined. The more anything is refined, the fewer nutrients it contains. That is also why on the Master Cleanse we use grade B maple syrup. It is less refined and has a higher nutrient value.

However, the noniodized is even more important when it comes to the sea salt. Many holistic practitioners believe that iodized salt is toxic to our bodies and is important to avoid. So from a cleansing standpoint it only makes sense to use the noniodized version.

Still need the minerals that the sea salt provides? You can add a kelp supplement that does have the additional minerals including natural iodine.

Iodized Salt for the Salt Water Cleanse?

Can I use iodized sea salt for cleansing and will it work?

Terri's Response:That is a very common question for people on the master cleanse. Since most people have iodized on hand but don't use sea salt.....yet.

I highly promote the use of sea salt for not only cleansing but for everyday use. We no longer even have the iodized version in our home.

First for the flush, if you use iodized, the flush won't work. The trace minerals from the sea salt and its ability to take on the same sodium level (when mixed with specific amounts of water) as your blood is what makes it so successful.

From the flavoring point of view, the iodized version does taste saltier as it is more refined. Whereas the seasalt contains trace minerals as well as the sodium and iodine. Iodized was originally created so the general population would get additional iodine in their diet to prevent thyroid problems.

Now some folks argue that the minerals in the seasalt are minimal. However, we do need only trace amounts of them so I feel like my family can use the extra minerals for a healthier body.

Can you use rock salt for Salt Water Cleanse?

Terri's Response: I don't have a definitive answer for that but my guess would be NO, you do not want to use rock salt for the salt water cleanse or flush.

Because you are going to drink the solution and the chemical balance of your body is so important, Celtic sea salt is your best bet.

Celtic has numerous trace minerals that will support your body. The reason the flush works so well is that saline solution you create has the same sodium level as your blood.

That is how it goes through your intestinal tract instead of your urinary tract. Think about it.

You take the sea salt and mix it with 32 ounces of water and you do not have to pee, you have to have a bowel movement instead. Very interesting process.

Be safe, use the Celtic version.

Salt Water Colon Cleanse

by dan
(Georgia)

Will the salt water hurt your liver drinking that much salt or any other organ?

Answer: Hi Dan,
First be sure to use Celtic Sea Salt and use the appropriate quantity in the recipe. Do NOT use iodized salt as it will not work properly and can be toxic to your body.

According to Stanley Burrough';s Master Cleanser Book, "the salt water has the same specific gravity as the blood, hence the kidneys cannot pick up the water and the blood cannot pick up the salt." He goes on to say "it can do no harm at any time."

Remember, for best results do the cleanse on an empty stomach.

Are Sea Salt and Distilled Water a Good Colon Cleanse

Terri's Comments: That is a very common questions. Many people think that the sea salt cleanse or flush is a great colon cleansing tool.

However, based on my experience, I am not so sure.

The flush was designed to go with the Master Cleanse which means that your body is taking in no food products, just liquids when the colon cleanse if performed.

It absolutely works great when you use the sea salt and distilled water when on a liquid fast.

I have tried the flush without fasting and taking in regular amounts of food. I have found that I do not experience any noticeable effects whatsoever.

The combination of the high quality celtic sea salt and distilled water works great when the colon is not filled with food. It helps flush out the excess debris.

However, when filled with food, it just can’t flush as there is too much in the way.

Just a side note: Anytime you are cleansing for any reason, it is best to use distilled water.
