Its important to make sure I have a normal adult blood sugar level. I monitor my blood sugar on a regular basis even though I don't have diabetes.
Why? Because it used to run in my family and I am making sure it no longer does. I want to keep tabs on it so if it starts to climb a bit I can take the proper nutritional precautions.
You can easily check your blood sugar at home every few weeks or daily if you have diabetes by using a test unit like Sidekick (although its good practice to speak with your health professional).
According to the American Diabetes Association, a normal adult blood sugar level when doing a fasting blood glucose test is less than 110 mg/dl.
Fasting means first thing in the morning before you eat. If you test it at any other time within a couple hours after eating, if should be anywhere from 100-150 mg/dl.
Blood Glucose Testing System
To
find out whether you are in normal range or not you perform this test
after you have fasted (no food or liquids other than water) for eight
hours. That's why its easiest to test your blood in the morning before
breakfast.
How to test:
That's not too difficult is it?
If your blood glucose reading is 126 mg/dl or higher after two consecutive blood tests, then you need to take some action.
(In 1997, the American Diabetes Association lowered the level at which diabetes is diagnosed to 126 mg/dl from 140 mg/dl.)
Diabetes is a precursor to so many other health issues, it is really important to get it under control...my preference is naturally.
For testing, I really like the glucose set - I find it convenient and very easy to use.
